Myofascia is the connective tissue that surrounds each muscle fibre, each muscle and each group of muscles. It allows the contraction and relaxation of each segment to occur smoothly and comfortably. When the myofascia becomes dehydrated, adhesions occur that stop or reduce movement, can inhibit the muscle from relaxing and can be very painful. Usually it would feel the same as a “tight muscle”.
Myofascial therapy then, focuses on these connective tissues rather than the muscle that is being affected. It is a gentle technique that allows the myofascia to release and slide over each other again.
